Quebec Bridge (second bridge)

The Quebec Bridge (Canada) was built in 18 years. During this time, there were two accidents (1907, 1916). This animation only illustrates the construction of the second bridge that started in 1911, 4 years after the collapse of the first bridge.

  • Where: Quebec, on the Saint Lawrence River
  • Opening ceremony: August 22, 1919
  • Central span: 549 m (the longest in the world for a cantilever bridge)
  • Total length: 987 m
  • Height: 104 m of which 46 m under the central span
  • Weight: 66,000 tons (= 1 aircraft carrier)
  • Number of rivets: 1,066,740
  • Length of work: 18 years
  • Cost: 21.7 M$CAD (Canadian Dollars)
  • Human toll: 200 deaths (estimated) of which 79 (collapse of August 29, 1907) and 13 (collapse of September 11, 1916)

The Quebec Bridge is a cantilever bridge (see also the simulation on the different types of bridges)

This technology for bridges has since been abandoned due to its high costs and heavy materials. Henceforth, the Quebec Bridge remains the cantilever bridge with the largest central span in the world.
